The Institution was established in 1886 as a Dutch Institution under the name of Magnetisch en Meteorologisch Observatorium. In 2008 its name changed into current name based on Presidential Decree No. 61 of 2008. BMKG's head office located in Jakarta and supported by 10 area offices, 5 great hall of BMKG located in Medan, Ciputat, Denpasar, Makassar dan Jayapura.
